Mark Bertrand graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in 2002 with a BA Hons in Fine Art. On moving back home to Manchester he joined the Vernon Mill Artist studio group, based in Portwood, Stockport. After viewing a selection of his paintings during Vernon Mill’s open studio weekend in October 2002, Comme Ca Art offered Mark Bertrand a solo exhibition at the Slug and Lettuce.

Using household paint, Mark creates bright, busy and colourful paintings that he calls ‘Liquid Landscapes’. They take on a life of their own, growing organically with each application of colour. The colours merge into swirls metamorphosing into one another, producing a complex series of images that mutate into a multiplicity of forms.

Mark Bertrand’s fluid paintings explore the extremities of scale between the microcosm of our inner space and the outer spaces of our surrounding universe, which are both in a constant state of flux, forever changing and in constant movement over time.

Recent exhibitions include: The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield. Breaking Spaces 1 & 2, Vernon Mill, Stockport, and Transmission (Cultureshock in conjunction with the Commonwealth Games) Zion Centre, Manchester.
