Born in Manchester in 1979, Matt Davies graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2002 with a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree.

“Going faster than a roller coaster” is dedicated to Matt Davies’ late father. This Buddy Holly song is true opus to his father’s joyful persona.

Davies’ wanted to celebrate past photographs by painting the bohemian side of his father, a side he had not come across until recently. Attempting figurative material relentlessly before this new body of work helped to tame some of his artistic apprehensions.

Davies’ new work includes figurative depictions of his father. Entering the Pack Horse pram race in 1966, wearing a nightgown, he was the winning passenger in a ‘Bat Mobile’ fitted pram.

Sitting beside this new work is a collection of paintings from the past as well as the present. Davies’ describes his painting as selfish, with a strong personal preferences and influences.

“Most of the time the battle that I have with this medium, deciding what fits in the right place takes pole position when creating work. The wait I have with uncompleted works is the most exciting part; process and elimination taunt my next action. It is essential to work on more than one piece at a time, residing in the fact that a set of paintings represents different stages of my life. These periods of time predominantly reveal my relationships and changes in lifestyle.”

Recent exhibitions include ‘John Moore’s 24’, ‘The Lowry Hotel Autumn Exhibition’ ‘Art Gene’, Cumbria and smaller exhibitions in the North West. This exhibition will be Davies’ first solo exhibition with Comme Ca Art. The artist has also worked with the music group, ‘Nine Black Alps’, producing their debut album artwork.
