The Little
Artists creations raise questions about what it means
to be an artist in the current super-branded cultural climate.
Their Lego interpretations of iconic artists and their
artworks, such as Hirst's Shark Tank', Dali's
Lobster Phone' and Koons' Balls, blur the boundary
between desirable objet d'art and the highly collectable merchandise
range.
Cake & Neave pride themselves on the seriousness of their
hybrids and the acknowledgment to the correct portrayal of
the artworks through the properties governed by Lego. They
clearly understand the possibilities presented to them within
the medium of Lego, and where the boundaries lie with respect
to the culture of Lego, one of learning, creativity and stimulation.
The results may be humorous and highly convincing and have
not only left children, but also adults genuinely intrigued,
belying the initial infantile appearance of the work.
The Little Artists will be showing Art Crazy Nation;
a large modern art gallery constructed entirely from Lego,
featuring a vast array of art masterpieces, artists, dealers
and art lovers. Large-format photographic scenes of these
tiny, plastic art characters, enlarging their world to an
unreal human scale, will complement this sculpture.
Cake and Neave met at university in the UK in 1992 whilst
studying Fine Art. Describing their time at collage in the
north of England Neave says, "A lot of the time it was
about being bored, I started to think how can someone in the
middle of nowhere make an impact on the art world?" And
with the art world expanding around them, they started sending
obscure proposals and letters to various places. "Can
we burn your gallery down?" being one that almost got
them arrested. Now they are reformed Little Artists
collecting Lego and making their own little art world fax
similes, (and of course, they are still sending proposals).
