Private Sanctuary, brain child of owner Nick Littlehales, opened its doors in the summer of 2002.

Tib Street was always the perfect location for Nick to open a flag ship store which specialises in own brand beds, pillows, duvets and comforters, along side books on how to learn to sleep well by the acclaimed sleep expert, Professor Chris Idzikowski. For anyone who is prone to a bad nights sleep, atmosphere and comfort are key factors to a restful night and the Northern Quarter’s relaxed atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of the high street, follows the trends of the city rather than the impersonal retail attitude of larger stores.

Nick has spent time creating a beautiful Private Sanctuary interior. Natural wood finishes, ambient lighting and stark white walls are the perfect setting for the sleep courses he holds at the store. Another unique addition to the interior are the art works by Manchester photographer, Jack Jackson and Manchester artist, Fiona Moate.

Jackson has exhibited his work in a number of group and solo shows which has led to commissions from editorial, advertising and commercial clients as well as a steady demand from individuals who want to commission portraits.
Having trained as a sculptor at Manchester Metropolitan University with a keen interest in the conceptual arts, Jackson’s work is as often art object as it is photograph.

The photographs in this exhibition were taken during a fashion assignment Jackson shot in Budapest in the winter of 1999.

"As a photographer, I usually specialise in the photography of people, on this fashion shoot I became interested in the details of life that surrounds the subjects, where they washed, watched TV, the view from the window. I started photographing these things and the pictures became evidence of a life or lifestyle. The pictures became more about the people than the portraits I was taking of them." Jackson Jackson

Fiona Moate’s work is essentially concerned with landscape and the relation between urban and rural environments. It reflects the artist’s rural background and the effect living in a city has had on her recent work.

"I am originally from rural Yorkshire, and now live in a city which the surrounding landscape can be seen against the overlay of successive generations of urban development - the hills and the light on them, endure behind factories, warehouses, and loft apartments."

The changes in light during the day along with concerns with colour, and mark making find their expression in the layers of the paint surface recording the mood and atmosphere of actual, visited places. At the same time, the paintings point towards larger processes at work in the landscape, both natural and otherwise.

Fiona Moate was born in East Yorkshire and studied fine art at Hull and Manchester. Her work has been exhibited throughout the UK and her paintings are in the collections of Manchester City Art Gallery, Oldham Art Gallery and private and public collections worldwide.

"Private Sanctuary is all about well-being - making the bedroom a place to unwind, relax and recharge your life." And with today’s hectic lifestyle, Private Sanctuary may be just what you need." Nick Littlehales
