Suzy Jones has always enjoyed entertaining value and the endless humour of comic books and this has had a massive influence on her present creative practice. During 2000 - 2001, Suzy worked on a year long project which involved taking five photographs three times a day over a period of about six months. The collection of images were then turned into an animated film. The images were rearranged to produce a sense of a new history for Suzy and in turn recreated a narrative for that six months of her life.

The present series of paintings on display at Centro stem from similar ideas to that of the animated film with a new fictional narrative represented in the style of comic books. The series is titled ‘THANKCHRONIC’, representing the relationship between art and entertainment and the place of each of these mediums in today’s society. The painted series plays on the idea of fine art and its collectible and commercial status, where as comic books are the embodiment of industry and multiples within the issues sold, etc. Suzy sees her work as pure entertainment, without the viewer having to understand the personal level of its narrative context and the real life relationships Suzy has with the paintings characters. She prefers the viewer to associate the character with their own associates, friends and family and in doing so her work is not only personal but also accessible.

‘My present body of work comments on commercialism and material products. It looks at the way in which merchandising and marketing influence the selling potential of a single idea. It’s about the place of fine art within society and my place within the same society as a fine artist." Suzy Jones

Suzy is currently working towards her forthcoming exhibition at Fresh Art in the summer of 2003.
