Sam Tongue

Sam Tonge is a new artist to Comme Ca Art and we are pleased to announce that this will be Sam’s first solo exhibition of portraits in Manchester.

Sam Tonge trained as a ballet dancer until after 4 years he was still unable to tell his left from right. With other arts this is not such a big concern. Sam Tonges' designs have been turned into a global brand. They are manufactured into products as diverse as parkas for dogs to kids bath plugs to pencil and pens.

”I love to experiment in different mediums & so paint was something I was drawn too. A thick strong line is part of my trademark style & to get the line also tactile is a delight. I think it a great idea that folks can touch artwork. Working most of the time digitally nowadays I get a huge kick from the fact that the method I use to create these pictures is completely imprecise, the paint being dripped from above & not applied directly to the canvas, so, no second chances!

As for the subject of my portraits, they have always been about expression or movement. Its hugely exciting for me the infinite possibilities the human form (especially the face! & head) can create. The turning of a head, a glance, it intrigues me how you may well know what someone is feeling just by the way he or she may be standing. So that is why my subjects are those folks we see in every everyday situations worldwide.” Sam Tonge
