The Comme Ca Art Prize North

SECOND YEAR FOR £10,000 COMME CA ART PRIZE
Prize for Artists in the North to form part of Liverpool Biennial

Now in its second year, the Comme Ca Art Prize 2004 was devised by Claire Turner, who splits her time between her galleries in Manchester and New York.

The prize was launched to help bring the art, artists and galleries associated with the North-West, Yorkshire and the North-East to a wider audience.

The inaugural Prize was won by Liverpool artist Paul Rooney from more than 300 entries for his video work entitled: ‘Flat 23’. He was presented with his £10,000 cheque by the Prize’s Patron and former Turner Prize winner Chris Ofili, who hails from Manchester.

This year the Prize will be part of Liverpool Biennial Independents 04 and the winning artist will be announced at the closing celebration party for the Biennial on 25th November 2004.

The 2004 prize is supported by the Northwest Development Agency, property company Urban Splash and recruitment specialists Xceli.

This year’s entrants will be judged by a panel representing the three Northern regions. Chair of the Jury is Stephen Snoddy, Director of BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, Eddie Berg, Executive Director of FACT in Liverpool and Penelope Curtis, Curator of the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds.

Artists can be nominated by members of the public as well as gallery curators and arts administrators – forms are being distributed through arts networks and can be printed off this website .

Closing date for entries is 27th August 2004. The winner will be selected from a shortlist of artists, whose work will be exhibited at Urban Splash’s 26-33 Old Haymarket building in Liverpool from 5th November 2004.

Comme Ca Art Director Claire Turner is delighted to launch the Prize for the second year: “The Prize has been so well received by the art community and galleries. It has certainly helped those working and exhibiting in the North to enjoy a wider profile.

“We are continuing our commitment to contemporary art in the North by moving the location of the exhibition of the short-listed artists’ work around the regions every year.”

“This year we are delighted to be able to hold the exhibition and announce the winner in Liverpool as part of the Biennial, which we hope will boost Liverpool’s profile as the European Capital of Culture in 2008.”

"Liverpool Biennial celebrates the best of the world's art in the unique context of the city's culture. I'm delighted that this year the prestigious Comme Ca show and prize will be here too, adding a significant sparkle to the Independent programme, and ensuring the cream of art from the north of England is seen by visitors from around the world."
Lewis Biggs, Chief Executive, Liverpool Biennial.

Stephen Snoddy, who resumes his role as Chair of the Jury for the second year said: “We were delighted by the quality of the work submitted for last year’s Prize which highlights the quality of contemporary art in the region and we are looking forward to viewing and selecting this year’s submissions.

“Liverpool is a city with a strong reputation for the energy and vibrancy with which it embraces art and culture, so it is fitting that we are hosting the exhibition here.”
