After the blustery, snowy weather of late, we thought we would add a little colour to the Lowry Hotel Spring Group Exhibition. We have brought together three very different artists, showcasing how different styles can work harmoniously together in any interior setting. 

 

HENRY CHAN

In his early childhood years Henry Chan would escape the boredom of suburban life by whiling away the hours of his youth through the bright and colourful superhero comics imported and sold by his local newsagent. These images 70’s Americana would go on to influence him as an artist in the future. 

While studying Graphics Design in College and Fine Art in University as an artist Henry was influenced by Pop / Graffiti and Traditional Fine art and by artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matise, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Banksy who’s use of imagery and sometimes vibrant colours reminded him of his youth. 

Henrys art is mainly a mixture of graffiti and pop art with popular culture often his subject matter and his art often satirising current issues in society such as celebrity culture, power and commercialism.

With his art Henry wants to arouse the senses and stir the spirit and wants his art to visually stimulate the observer through strong images, colour, patterns and words.

Henry often enjoys the look and feel of tight and accurate geometric lines mixed with strong vibrant colours and bold patterns often surrounding a central figure from the world of popular culture.

 

REBECCA DAVY

Rebecca Davy’s primary concern when creating her artworks is the act of painting itself. Her focus is on what she describes as “the seductiveness and sensuousness of pushing paint on canvas”. She is particularly attracted to painting the colourful, the ephemeral and the kitsch, constructing paintings with a strong element of light and colour that satisfies both the subject and its medium.

Moving on from her successful ‘Gingerbread House’ series, Rebecca started to paint cakes. Cup Cakes, Gateau and Gooey Buns. For her, sticky and colourful things such as cakes and icing are good subjects for the visceral quality of oil paint on canvas. 

Her subject matter could almost make her paintings seem rather twee but Rebecca’s talent and confidence in the use of oil paint creates a new realm between the kitsch and the hyper real. Rebecca is one of the most accomplished artists working with oil paint on the current Manchester art scene.

 

JOHN HAMILTON

John Hamilton’s work depicts figures in various disguises or costumes. They centre around figures in (mis) adventurous situations. There is a continuous theme of role-play, with a theatrical element. They are sometimes story-based, and always told with a touch of humour and a sense of loyalty. 

John likes to compare the work to stills from a play or a film. A snap shot from a photograph album. A captured moment. What has happened before it or what happens next, only the viewer knows.

Every picture tells a story, but the artist wants you to be the storyteller - he wants you to decide what is happening. Some of the characters appear mysterious and sinister, while others appear to be relaxed and at ease, but it is not always easy to tell which is which.
