Paul Bennett was born in Windsor, Berkshire, United Kingdom, in 1975. He graduated from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design in 2001, with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting. It wasn’t until long after graduating that Paul picked up the brushes again and sought to carve out a new living as an artist.

With global representation, Paul is now an international fine artist specialising in semi-abstract seascapes and landscapes, as well as contemporary portraiture.

In a backlash against the throwaway images that we are surrounded by, Paul’s aim is to create work that is most definitely painted. This is accomplished by using rich textures, multiple layers, poured paint and brush/palette knife marks. The hope is that Paul’s paintings become an antidote to what can be superficial tendencies, and an opportunity to digest and assimilate our visual world in a different way. Paul wants to tease out more than the eye can see, to draw people in and invite them to experience – not just consume – an image.

His work is in private and public collections worldwide.

The show in Manchester, with Comme Ca Art, will be covering two different perspectives. One will be a series of figurative portraits, which will focus on taking the subject back to a more gestural form. The looseness of the style encourages the viewer to relate to the works more intensely. The Portraits should feel separated from the mass bombardment of the human form, which we consume tirelessly through TV, social media and other media.

The seascape/landscape paintings in this series are looking at the idea of a wild and natural world. Paul has not represented specific places, but is trying to capture a general sense of place and time. The focus is more entwined with atmosphere and the suggestion of location. People that view these paintings can project their own memories of a place and react with elements that feel familiar. The paintings are there to be explored.
