Paintings by
ADRIAN PRITCHARD & FAY WATANABE PRITCHARD
Lowry Hotel, 50 Dearmans Place, Salford, Manchester, M3 5LH
Exhibition Dates: 04.09.25 - 14.10.25
The phrase “As above, so below” originates in Hermetic philosophy and expresses the idea that natural laws and patterns are reflected across all levels of reality. Its Arabic rendering:
ا إن الأعلى من الأسفل والأسفل من الأعلى
(Inna al-aʿlā min al-asfal wa-l-asfal min al-aʿlā)
—translates more precisely as: “That which is above is from that which is below, and that which is below is from that which is above.” This interpretation emphasises reciprocity: the two realms arise from one another, influence each other, and exist in mutual dependence.
This exhibition presents the work of father and daughter, Adrian and Fay, whose practices though distinct in style, method, and conceptual agenda are unified by a shared sensitivity to harmony, balance, and the interconnectedness of inner and outer worlds. Their dialogue in paint reflects both the vast, unfolding cosmos and the subtleties of the microcosm.
Adrian’s practice is informed by a long-standing fascination with physics, space exploration, and the mutable nature of matter. Inspired by the discovery of extrasolar planets, he adopts a process that blends scientific curiosity with painterly experimentation. Working with resins and metallic pigments on circular discs, he tips and turns the surfaces, allowing chemistry and gravity to guide their formation. The resulting multi-layered compositions recall planetary landscapes dynamic, intricate, and ever changing.
Fay’s work, by contrast, embraces quietude and light. Using diluted pigments on calico, she creates translucent, layered surfaces that invite natural light to interact with more grounded forms. Her colour palettes warm hues set against airy cool tones evoke a sense of mystery and nostalgia. The process is meditative and intuitive, unfolding through mark-making that reveals perspectives unforeseen at the outset.
While Adrian’s works wrestle with gravity and materiality, Fay’s paintings cultivate stillness and contemplation. Together, their practices embody complementary forces: active and receptive, dynamic and serene.
As Above, So Below highlights how their contrasting approaches converge in a shared search for harmony, echoing ancient philosophical insights into the patterned and interconnected nature of the universe and, by extension, ourselves.
The exhibition is open daily from 10:00 - 22:00 and is on the first floor of the Lowry Hotel.
