Robert has been a professional photographer since 1980.
His commercial clients have included Olympus, Mercedes, Reebok and The Royal Mail, producing a set of stamps to celebrate British Cinema.
Alongside his advertising work Robert has always developed personal projects. He produced a series of portraits featuring quintessential English characters, including Quentin Crisp, Dame Vivienne Westwood, George Melly and Frank Sidebottom! He was also one of Take That’s official photographers.
This collection of portraits and New York Cityscapes were all taken pre digital and reflect a period of Robert’s work which focused on the gritty realism of his sitters and the places they inhabit. This was a time before photoshop, a time when “capturing the moment” meant just that. From a chance encounter with Quentin Crisp to the iconic beauty of the Twin Towers, Heads and Tales captures a period of possibility.
Robert has achieved recognition for his work from The Association of Photographers, D&AD and Nikon.
A career highlight was having pieces selected for the permanent collection of The National Portrait Gallery in 2012.
He has been represented in group shows in New York, Florence and Manchester as well as the Saatchi Gallery in London. In addition to 3 solo shows, the latest being with Comme Ca in 2013, his work is also in this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
